It takes a real idiot to keep a Steeler waiting.
But if anyone was up to the task, I'm sure it comes as no surprise when I tell you that idiot was me.
See, in the wake of last week's conversation with Ryan Clark, Verizon Fios and their ManCave contest offered me the opportunity to speak with this year's 1st round draft pick, Ziggy Hood.
As if I wouldn't take advantage of THAT!
So, you know, you'd figure I'd have my act together.
Long story short - after two missed calls, I finally got myself to a place where I could answer my phone and on the other end was the man himself.
The good news is, I can now say that there's probably no better way to get your day started than talking to Ziggy Hood (interview took place at 8 AM yesterday, so lay off me).
You can tell right off the bat why the Steelers drafted him (besides the fact that he's got inhuman talent). As even Ziggy spoke about himself, he is a "high-character" guy. Hell, any professional football player of his caliber who would take the time to call a blogger like me directly (yes, it was Ziggy himself, no PR reps) has already proven his point. And a professional football player of his caliber who would take the time to call a blogger more than once(!), after that blogger missed two calls already, is in line for a Rooney Award as far as I'm concerned.
I could go on and on about how pleasantly down-to-Earth Ziggy is, but you're probably already vomiting all over yourselves from my gushing bromance.
So I'd just like to profusely apologize to Ziggy again (yes, I'm aware that he probably isn't going to read this), and thank him very much for handling the situation with patience and grace.
Fortunately, this time I recorded the interview. So you don't have to take my word for what Ziggy said.
Although, just as a disclaimer -- my voice is at about a 15 and Ziggy is more comfortably at around a 6 or 7. So I apologize for the fact that you have to listen to me very loudly try not to be nervous (or listen to me at all), but hey, you endured eight years of Joey Porter's yap, I think you can handle five or so minutes of mine.
Anyways, when you press play below, you will hear Ziggy talk about what it was like to get drafted by the Steelers, how he likes playing along the Steelers pro bowl defensive line, his goal(s) for this season, what motivates him for games, and his upcoming appearance this Saturday at the Ross Park Mall (more information on this below).
Despite the fact that I'm the one asking the [obligatory] questions, I hope you enjoy...
Now, like I said above, Ziggy is going to be at the Ross Park Mall this Saturday from 2 PM - 4 PM.
If I were you, I'd be first in line for an autograph, and a minute with this guy.
Extremely solid human being.
And while you're there, be sure to use the video booths provided by Verizon to record your best effort to persuade the masses that you deserve a ManCave makeover (booths will be open from 10 AM - 9 PM).
Again, to refresh your memories -- the contest is only open to PA residents who are (over 18 and) able to receive Verizon Fios service, and the contest runs until November 30.
So seriously, quit jaggin' around and go win yourself some new toys.
